Working temporarily in Canada

April 13, 2008 by yoakow

Every year, over 90,000 foreign workers enter Canada to work temporarily in jobs that help Canadian employers address skill shortages, or as live-in caregivers.

A work permit is needed for most temporary jobs in Canada, though for some positions and business people it is not necessary. More information on work permits for temporary jobs can be found in this section of the website.

Live-in Caregiver Program

April 13, 2008 by yoakow

Live-in Caregiver Program

The Live-in Caregiver Program is a special government program, whose objective is to bring workers to Canada to do live-in work as Caregivers, when there are not enough Canadians to fill the available positions. A live-in Caregiver is someone who provides care to children, the elderly or the disabled in a private household.

How to hire a live-in caregiver
Two general steps that must be taken in order to have a live-in Caregiver come to Canada.

  1. The Employer must first apply to Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) for the job offer to be approved.
  2. The Caregiver must then apply to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) for an Employment Authorization in order to work in Canada.

For more information about the Live-in Caregiver Program, please view our Meeting the Criteria page, which explains some more details about the Live-in Caregiver Program.

Au Pair & Nanny Salary

April 5, 2008 by yoakow
There are several important factors to consider when defining the salary for your aupair or nanny. And you should know the value of what you’ll get before you pay for it.

Salary is not dependent on the need of the individual, rather on the value they provide based on their experience. Remember that the starting salary for a live-in aupair as defined by the US State Department is US$157.95 and in the UK it is less: £40-55. Simply because an aupair or nanny asks for a certain rate does not necessarily mean it is deserved. Salary should be earned based on demonstrated performance and current value. And market values change based on economic conditions.

AuPair and Nanny Salary Guidelines

Important Factors Affecting Au Pair & Nanny Salaries

      • Works 5 hours per day, 5 days per week
      • Baby sits 2-3 evenings per week
      • Receives 2 free days and evenings off
      • Weekly salary ranges from 52 – 65 €
      • Works 6 hours per day, 5 days per week
      • Baby sits 2-3 evenings per week
      • Receives 2 free days and 3 evenings off
      • Weekly salary ranges from 78 – 95 €
      • Works 8 hours per day, 6 days per week
      • Baby sits 4-5 evenings per week
      • Receives 1 free day and 3 evenings off
      • Weekly salary ranges from 104 – 120 €
  1. Qualifications
  2. Are you hiring an au pair with standard baby sitting experience that requires training or are you hiring an experienced au pair or nanny that has over three years of aupair or nanny experience with 200 hours of documented infant care experience, CPR training and child care education credentials?

  3. Total Cost Comparison – Live in or Live Out?
  4. Will your aupair or nanny be living in your home and will you be covering all of her food and utility costs? Possibly health insurance and car insurance? Will she travel with you on vacations as part of your family – with some free time off? This is an important point to consider since the cost of housing in most major metro areas ranges from US$13,200 to US$20,400 and up per year. Those are costs that your aupair or nanny will not have to bear if she is a live-in. So when considering the salary you plan to pay, factor in the value of room and board then add your weekly pay to come up with a realistic annualized salary. Then compare that salary to the salary of a local school teacher (who has a four-year degree) or to the salary of a day care provider in your area. That way you will get a relative comparison of the salary for the value of the service of your aupair or nanny.

It is also important to understand your overall cost if you plan to hire your aupair through an agency. The following fees/costs are listed in US dollars and based on averages for US agencies. The costs shown do not account for supplemental expenses you will incur while having a live-in, such as food, utilities and family vacations, etc. These costs will vary depending on your country.

    Agency program fee
    $ 6,385
    Agency application fee
    $300
    Domestic aupair airfare cost
    $500
    Education fee
    $500
    Annual aupair salary at $158/wk
    $8,216
    Total annual cost
    $15,901
    Weekly cost
    $306

  5. Previous Experience
  6. How many years of child care experience does your aupair or nanny have? If your candidate has less than three years of experience of continuous referential employment as a child care provider, then she is at the beginning of her child care career and will not typically receive a weekly salary above $200 per week on a live-in basis.

  7. Maturity and Education Level
  8. What is the maturity and education level of the child care provider you are hiring? Does she have a four-year college degree or a Master’s Degree? The higher the education, the more you will typically pay your aupair or nanny. Your aupair or nanny will have a definite influence on your children and she will be partly responsible for their ongoing education in assisting with school work and proper grammar. Be sure you hire an aupair or nanny with the right kind of influence for your children. A four-year degree may increase the base salary up to 20 percent and a Master’s Degree may increase the base salary up to 40 percent depending on practical, related experience in the field of child care.

  9. Geographic Location: Supply and Demand
  10. Where you live, the number of available candidates in your area, how desirable your city is, the cost of living and the cost of child care in your area will affect the rate you pay your aupair or nanny. In many major metro areas where the cost of living is high, there is also a high demand for qualified child care and thus the salaries for aupair and nannies tend to be competitive, which means that the costs for child care in more rural areas tend to be comparatively lower. Compared to the United States, European countries tend to pay far less for aupairs, nannies, child minders and house help. So if you live in a European country you will want to strongly weight this factor when scoring the qualifications of your aupair or nanny to determine the appropriate salary.

As an example, there are three different classifications for an aupair in most European countries: Au Pair, Au Pair Plus and Mother’s Help, each with varying pay depending mostly on the hours worked.

    Au Pair in Europe

    Au Pair Plus in Europe

    Mother’s Help in Europe

  11. Scope of Responsibility
  12. Are you hiring an aupair or a nanny for part-time or full-time work? How many actual hours per week will you require their services? Do you require more than 45 hours per week? If so, the weekly salary should be adjusted accordingly. How many children will the aupair or nanny care for? If the aupair or nanny will have care for more than three children, the weekly rate should be increased by 10 percent per child. Basic services such as grocery shopping, cooking meals for the children and light housework are typically expected in the basic job description.

However, some nannies may also provide additional household management services; overseeing gardening, kitchen or cleaning staff, or even handling bills. Such services depend on the nanny’s education and experience. Such services usually demand greater responsibility and specialized experience for which higher salaries are expected and deserved. Professional nannies with over five years of contiguous child care experience and at least a four-year degree that are providing full household management services beyond child care, shopping, cooking and light housework may find salaries extending well beyond US$400 per week.

Aupair Visa Canada – Au Pair Program in Canada

April 5, 2008 by yoakow

Aupair Visa Canada – Au Pair Program in Canada

Canada does not offer an official au pair program, however, youth between 18 and 30 may qualify for a working holiday Visa or student work program from some commonwealth countries.

Canada also has a Live in Caregiver Visa open to caregivers up to the age of 50.  This visa allows foreign employees to enter Canada as a caregiver. Successful applicants receive an employment authorization allowing them to work in Canada as live-in caregivers. After two years of employment, program participants can apply in Canada to become permanent residents; they may be granted permanent resident status provided they meet certain requirements. Note: the two years of employment must be completed within three years of the caregiver’s arrival in Canada.

Student / Youth Working Holiday Programs:

If you are between the ages of 18 and 30 and you are searching for overseas travel opportunities that will allow you the flexibility to work on short term contracts, visit the International Youth Programs page.

Canada has a variety of Student Youth Programs available to most Common Wealth nationals including: Australia, New Zealand, The UK, Ireland, Finland, Sweden, Denmark,
http://www.canada.org.uk/visa-info/worker/e_stuwor.htm These programs are often run through partners with Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Some youth who are Common Wealth citizens may be able to apply to Citizenship and Immigration Canada directly for a Working Holiday Visa. Please contact Citizenship and Immigration Canada: http://www.cic.gc.ca

Live in Caregiver Visa:

The Live-in Caregiver Program allows workers to go to Canada for live-in work as caregivers when there are not enough Canadians to fill the available positions. A “live-in caregiver” is someone who provides unsupervised care of children, the elderly, or the disabled in a private household.

Please check with the Canadian Embassy in your country to determine the processing time for a live in caregiver visa. Expect normal processing times from 6-24 months.  Filipino nationals wanting to immigrate to Canada should expect a longer than normal visa processing time.  The CIC site has links to find out how long it is currently taking for applications processed in Canada, and applications processed outside of Canada.

You can learn about Canada’s Live in Caregiver Visa at:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pub/caregiver/index.html

There are four main requirements applicants must meet to qualify under the Live-in Caregiver Program:

  1. Applicants must have successfully completed the equivalent of a Canadian high school education. This requirement will help to ensure that if you apply for permanent residence after two years as a live-in caregiver, you will be able to succeed in the general labour market. Studies indicate that the majority of new jobs in Canada require at least a high school education.
  2. Applicants must have six months of full-time training in a classroom setting or twelve months of full-time paid employment, including at least six months of continuous employment with one employer in a field or occupation related to the job you are seeking as a live-in caregiver. You may have gained your training or experience in areas such as early childhood education, geriatric care, pediatric nursing or first aid. You may also have completed your training as part of your formal education. This experience must have been obtained within the three years immediately prior to the day on which you submit an application for a work permit.
  3. Applicants must be able to speak, read and understand either English or French at a level that allows you to function independently in a home setting. For example, you must be able to contact emergency services if required and to understand labels on medication. You will be unsupervised for most of the day and may be required to communicate with someone outside the home. A good knowledge of English or French will also enable you to read and understand your rights and obligations.
  4. Applicants must have a written employment contract between you and your future employer. The contract defines your job duties, hours of work, salary and benefits. The contract also reinforces your employer’s legal responsibilities to you. This requirement helps provide a fair working arrangement between the caregiver and the employer and provides both parties with a clear understanding of what is expected of them.

Who pays the au pair’s travel costs?

April 1, 2008 by yoakow

In most countries travel costs must be paid for by the au pair. Please read the information about which regulations apply in your host country.

Hints for host families

The au pair’s journey to your family: Even if you want to or if you have to pay for a part of the au pair’s travel expenses or the whole amount, we strongly recommend  not to send money (or tickets) to the au pair on beforehand. Unfortunately it sometimes happens that money has been sent and the au pair does never arrive. Please reimburse the travelling expenses only after the au pair’s arrival. Many families wish to employ an au pair from a far away country which is “exotic” according to their opinion. But they do not pay attention that the average monthly income of a family in those countries is very low. When choosing your au pair, please take into consideration that your au pair has to pay for his/her flight costs. Although it might be nearly impossible for your au pair to afford the flight ticked due to the normal income in those countries, you should anyway not make advance payments. The au pair’s return journey: If you are satisfied with your au pair, we recommend you to pay the costs of the return journey.
If you want the au pair to leave your family on beforehand, you should pay for his/her return ticket. Of course, this only applies if the au pair leaves the country and does not go to a new host family.

Hints for au pairs

Far away countries can have a special attraction. But do you have enough money for going there? Travel expenses as well as language courses need to be paid by yourself.

Special provisions for USA !!

Au pairs who want to go to an American host family in the USA have to contact an accepted agency. Please read our information on regulations for au pairs and host families in the USA.
